Alberto Sughi

1928
Italian

Biography: Born in Cesena in 1928, Sughi comes from a classical studies background. Artistically, he was self-taught. His first paintings date from the early 40’s. Fully in control of his painting style, he performed with clear objective reasoning, he represented formal effects of expressions of works inspired by city life. In his pictorial works precise and comprehensible lines of style are revealed as in his “Green pictures” (1971-1973); in the series The Dinner (1975-1976); Imagination and Memory of the Family (early 80’s); The Evening (from 1985); Going where? (90’s); Nocturnal (2000's); Sughi has exhibited all around the world, he leaves and works in Rome. . . . . . "Starting a new painting is like moving in a particular direction. Painting is like going on a journey, sometimes full of adventures, which can take you to totally unexpected places. Oliver Cromwell said that "nobody goes as far as someone who doesn't know where he's going". This may be true, however paradoxical it seems. In any case, I also believe that you could work on the same painting for an indefinite length of time. When I feel that a painting has its own voice and is coming alive, I want to live with it, talk to it, quarrel with it, and agree with it. In other words, I don't want to put my signature to it, and bring the experience to an end." Alberto Sughi (artquotes.net 2004 interview)
